September 2      9:30 a.m. Lev Eisha Service in the Sanctuary

  From Barbara's Kitchen

In August we don't have any feast days to celebrate. This month's recipe reflects the desire for cold foods on these hot days. It takes a little time to prepare it, but it freezes well and you can enjoy it all summer long.

If you have a food processor use it to chop all the vegetables.

GAZPACHO

1 onion
1 clove garlic
2 stalks celery
2 green peppers
2 cucumbers
parsley
cilantro
4 tomatoes
1 (46 oz.) tomato juice
1/8 cup olive oil
1/8 cup red wine vinegar
1/2 teaspoon hot pepper sauce paprika

Chop the onion and garlic very fine and place in a large bowl.
Chop celery and add to onion and garlic.
Chop the green pepper and add it to the bowl of vegetables.
Peel 1 cucumber and chop fine. Add to the mixture in the bowl.
Score second cucumber with a fork and slice it very thin. Set aside.
Chop the parsley and the cilantro. Add to vegetables.
Chop the tomatoes and add to vegetables.
Add remaining ingredients and mix well.
Chill before serving.

Ladle soup into bowls. Garnish with sliced cucumbers.

The Ten Commandments and You

Come learn about the Ten Commandments from parashat Va'et'hanan with Robin Winston, who has been learning with Rabbi August. Robin has a wonderful study plan for us, which will help us get to the underlying meanings and help us make a personal connection with the Decalogue. Cindy Paley will lead us in Shabbat songs which will lead us into the topic, and Elaine Segal will "take us through the narrow places" with a guided meditation. It'll be a great opportunity for learning and for spiritual development.

This is a really special Lev Eisha event not to be missed. If you're not sure what to expect, come anyway! You'll be able to say you were there when everyone else is talking about this wonderful Shabbat experience.

Tisha B'Av Services August 2nd

Tisha B'Av is the ninth day of the month of Av, the day when we commemorate the destruction of our Temple in Jerusalem--twice! It concludes the period of mourning that begins three weeks earlier on the Fast of the 17th of Tamuz with a service where we sit on the floor and read Lamentations by "candle" light. It sounds kind of dreary but it's really a beautiful service. It's also a reminder that, just as there's a cycle to life, there's also a cycle to history. Following destruction comes renewal. Following a fall comes a rise. Following exile is return. All Lev Eisha members who are looking for a service to attend are welcome to come to Adat Shalom where Rabbi August and Cantor Greenfeld will be leading us in an evening of study & prayer: Wednesday, August 2nd at 7:30 p.m. Bring a small flashlight.

Milestones

Our condolences go to Lev Eisha member Shoshi Wilchfort on the passing of her mother, member Frieda Schwartz.
