In this week's parasha we find ourselves in Egypt with Joseph. Yaakov is leaving the land of Israel due to famine. He's taking his whole family to
Egypt. They are shepherds and are given the region of the Nile Delta in which to live with their sheep. Here is a recipe they might have used back then.
Lemon Flavored Egyptian Lamb
1 lb. lamb stew meat, diced into 1" cubes
1/2 lb. onion, finely chopped
2 oz. garlic, crushed
2 oz. almonds without skin
2 oz. ground coriander
1/2 tsp. grated lemon rind
kosher salt to taste
3 tbsp. sunflower oil
1 tsp. garam masala
lemon juice to taste
To garnish:
lime & lemon slices
whole almonds with skin
Instructions:
Grind almonds, onion, garlic and ground coriander in a food processor.
Stir in oil, lemon rind and salt.
Dip all the lamb pieces in this mixture and marinate in the fridge for 1 hour.
In a Dutch oven, add lamb along with the marinade.
Start cooking until all the liquid evaporates and oil starts separating; this should take 5 minutes.
Add just enough water to cover the lamb. Cover and simmer until lamb is tender.
Add garam masala and lemon juice. Adjust the consistency of the sauce by adding a little water, if required.
Bring to the boil.
Add a few slices of lemon and immediately cover and remove from heat.
Serve garnished with almonds and slices of lime and lemon.
Serve hot over a bed of Basmati Rice. Men should wear little skirts and lots of eye make-up and women should wear pleated linen shifts to add to the flavor.

Tallitot Designed for Women

On Saturday night, March 14, 2009, Lev Eisha will go to the movies at the Adat Shalom "Theatre" for its annual fundraiser. We will be screening a
documentary film about legendary funny Jewish women, including Sophie Tucker, Fanny Brice, Molly Picon, Joan Rivers, Gilda Radner and Wendy Wasserstein.
Through archival material, rare films, and TV clips, the film brings to life how three generations of women broke the entertainment barriers and defied
cultural expectations. The film was produced by a collaboration of the Jewish Woman's Archive along with JWA Productions. Following the movie, several
female Jewish comedians, comedy writers and comedic actors will schmooze about the film as well as how being Jewish plays in their comedic writing and
routines. |

Advertising will go community-wide and we hope you will bring male as well as female family and friends to join in this fun-filled
evening. Please re-gift Lev Eisha, after the Winter holidays, with new items your cupboards cannot bear and we will magically include some of them into our

Lev Eisha is offering tallitot designed for the women of Lev Eisha. What makes a tallit a woman's tallit? The color, texture, size and weight.
Each of the tallitot has been created in luxurious lightweight silk by Afghani-Israeli artists Shlomo and Hagar Yekutiel. Jewel tones of ruby, sapphire,
citrine, amethyst and silver are striped with coordinating colors and embroidered at the atarah (collar) and arbah kanfot (four corners). The Tallitot do
not have tzitziot (corner strings), but you can easily tie your own using the directions and illustration given on our website (in the archives).
Each tallit is $96 and the proceeds directly benefit Lev Eisha. You are welcome to contact me (your editor) to come and try them on at my home in West Los
Angeles. The photos do not do justice to their colors or texture. You really need to come and see them up close. I suggest that this would be the greatest
