This is a very special time of year...SUKKOT is here! Everyone wonders what they should do with their etrog, once they have finished with the holiday. Many of us stick cloves in it and let is shrivel up over the year to use for havdallah. I, however, am a strong believer in a strong liqueur.

Here is the tried and true recipe of a very dear friend who has graciously shared her liqueur with me on years that I haven't made my own. If you don't want to make your own, bring your etrog to Lev Eisha in October and give it to me. I'll brew up a nice batch for a Purim time. L'chaim!

Etrog Liqueur per Catherine Nelson

1. Carefully peel the yellow only into 1/4 strips.

2. Use 2-3 etrogs per bottle of vodka. Stoly is a good choice.

3. Pour vodka into glass sun tea jar w/ rind.

4. Cool in a dark place for six weeks. Don't put it in the fridge, but in the back of the closet, behind that evening gown you forget to wear, or someplace more interesting.

5. After six weeks, remove rind and stir in a cup of sugar (really fine baker's sugar) and go up to 1 1/2 cups.

6. Pour back into cool looking bottles. Put away 'til Purim in cool place.

In deference to Rabbi August's inspiring sermons over the holidays, we have given her column the month off.

Membership Time!

Membership dues for this Jewish calendar year are due. Send in the membership form found in your mailing, or complete it on-line with your credit card at www.leveisha.org. It's very easy to do.

Our premiums this year, based on your level of membership, are a custom Lev Eisha heart keychain, a cd of our sacred music, or a copy of The Bridge to Forgiveness: Stories and Prayers for Finding God and Restoring Wholeness by Karyn D. Kedar, chosen by Rabbi Toba August.

Passover is coming--but not for a while! We are assembling a Passover cookbook to be distributed at our Women's Seder on March 30, 2008. Please submit your recipe to us via the form in your mailing or at recipe@leveisha.org. By your submission you certify that this recipe is written in your own words and not copied from some other source.

Adat Shalom Gala Shabbat

New at Adat Shalom is a special Shabbat evening every third Friday. This month, on October 19, at 7:30, there will be an extraordinarily special service; a gala evening honoring the new Adat Shalom Cantor Benjamin Tisser. Before the service is a Shabbat dinner starting at 6:00 p.m. ($18 per person, reservations required by October 17). Special guests for the gala service include Rabbi Edward Feinstein, Rabbi Harold Schulweis, Cantor Herschel Fox, and Dr. Noreen Green. There will also be an appearance by the Adat Shalom Band!

The evening doesn't end there. Following the service there will be an oneg Shabbat with dessert and Israeli dancing. Childcare is available so there's no excuse not to come and have fun! Future 3rd Friday themes include the Board installation in November, Salsa Shabbat in December and a Shabbat Shira service in January. All Lev Eisha members are welcome, so if you're looking for an interesting Friday night service, give it a try.
