Israel's 60th Birthday! Happy Rosh Chodesh Iyar!

Support Israel and buy Israeli products, wines, and technology!

Join us on May 3, 2008 (28th of Nisan, 5768) at 8:30 a.m. in the Social Hall for breakfast and study with Rabbi August, and promptly at 9:30 a.m for Services. The Torah portion is Kedoshim from the book of Leviticus. Our service will be led by Rabbi Toba August and Cindy Paley.

Bring your tambourine and your dancing shoes. Please be on time so that you won't miss a minute of the uplifting music that characterizes our prayer community!

This month our Kiddush is graciously sponsored by Sandy Terranova in honor of her birthday and her parents' 65th (!) wedding anniversary. Also, the members of the Board of Directors are sponsoring in honor of our beloved percussionist, Joy Krauthammer.

Sadly, we do not have a sponsor for the May Breakfast and Brucha yet (we will meet for a simple meal and study even if no one sponsors fancy food). If you, or a group of friends, would like to sponsor this month's special breakfast in honor, or in memory, of someone special, please contact our catering committee today at catering@leveisha.org. Your sponsorship allows these special learning opportunities to continue for all of our members and guests.

Flag of Israel

Just sixty years ago, the State of Israel was born. A homeland for Jewish people everywhere. The only functional democracy in the Middle East. On the 5th of Iyar, this year celebrated on May 8th, we celebrate this miracle. It is the fulfillment of God's promise that we would be returned to our rightful homeland.

Yom Ha'Atzma'ut, Independence Day, is celebrated with fireworks, picnics and barbecues. Here's a recipe for chicken on the "barbie"-Chag Sameach and Enjoy!

Barbecued Lemon & Dill Chicken

Serves 8

4 breasts and 4 leg/thigh combos

Marinade:
Juice of 4 lemons
Good pinch of black pepper
8 cloves of garlic, crushed
4 Tbsp. of fresh chopped dill weed

Combine the marinade ingredients in a really big ZipLock bag and dance the Hora to mix them well. Two choruses should suffice. Toss in the chicken pieces, dance another round and let them marinate for at least 30 minutes. Overnight is even better. Just shake it up one more time before you go to sleep.

Grill the chicken for 5-10 minutes on each side and baste with the marinade. Serve with Israeli salad and a toast to Israel's 60th with a lovely Israeli chardonnay from the Galil.

You will find a nice selection of Israeli wines at our Seder sponsors: Kosher Club, Little Jerusalem, and Santa Monica Glatt Market.

You Can Count the Omer - And know that You Count!
by Rabbi Toba August

Are you counting the days of the Omer? The tradition is to count seven weeks, forty-nine days, from the second night of Passover until the night before Shavuot. Why should we participate in this ancient rite?

In ancient times, Passover was the beginning of the barley harvest, and the ancient Israelites were told to bring an "omer" - a measurement of barley, as a sacrifice, a giving back to God, in gratitude for a successful harvest.

After 7 weeks, the holiday of Shavuot was celebrated and the "bikurim", the first fruits of the next harvest, the wheat crop, were brought as another sacrifice of gratitude for the gift of sustenance.

How can this be meaningful for us today?

If we delve deeper, moving from the agricultural theme, we know that the 7 weeks from Passover to Shavuot was also a spiritual preparation to "receive" the Torah on Mt. Sinai.

According to the mystical tradition, we link each of the 49 days to the seven "Sefirot" - specific aspects of God, which reflect various character traits. We have an exciting opportunity to explore one aspect of our own personality and consider the potential for change and growth. Each day is unique as we become aware of ourselves in unexpected ways.

Join us for breakfast Shabbat Morning May 3rd at 8:30 to delve into the spiritual counting of the Omer. We count each day, to make each day count.

Milestones

A big yasher koach to all of us who made and blessed Pesach seders with our wit, wisdom, and ways in the kitchen.

A warm mazel tov to Lev Eisha president Olivia Goodkin, on her son Geoff Schwartz being drafted by the NFL's Carolina Panthers. As Olivia says, he's a "big cat!"

If you have a milestone to share please send it to: editor@leveisha.org. Our newsletter gets printed about a week before each service. Please send the info ASAP.
