pecan pie

Tu B'Shvat (the 15th of Shvat) is here! The "Birthday of the Trees" falls on Monday, February 9th. The almond tree flowers in Israel for the first time all winter. This gentle blessing heralds the arrival of Spring! We celebrate Tu B'Shvat by eating nuts and fruits from the bounty of the trees. Many communities hold to the custom of a Tu B'Shvat Seder that carefully explains the mystical relationships between God and this world through the various nuts, fruits, and juices we enjoy.

Here is my Tante Betty's prize winning pecan pie. You can use Earth Balance margarine to make it pareve and it's still yummy.

Elizabeth's Pecan Pie
1st Place-Beverly Hills Farmers' Market

You will need...

1 9-inch pie crust unbaked
1 cup light corn syrup
1 cup firmly packed dark or golden brown sugar
3 eggs slightly beaten
1/3 cup butter, melted
1/3 tsp salt
1 tsp vanilla
1 heaping cup of chopped pecans

Pre heat oven to 350 degrees.
Prepare the pie crust.

In a large bowl, combine the corn syrup, sugar, eggs butter, salt and vanilla and mix well.
Pour filling into the unbaked pie crust and sprinkle with pecans.

Bake for 45 to 50 minutes, or until the center is set. While the pie is in the oven, run around the block as fast as you can so that you can justify all the pie you're about to eat.

Decorate with 8 pecan halves around the edge. This prevents people from slicing too thinly and making a mess of your work. Sprinkle powdered sugar on the crust. You can do this by flipping a salad plate over the center and then the sugar falls only on the crust.

Good luck and enjoy! Tante Betty

Lev Eisha Is On The Move!
A Letter from our President

As of April, Lev Eisha will be moving its location. Rabbi August has resigned from Adat Shalom as its head rabbi, effective January 31, 2009. Our last Lev Eisha services in the Adat Shalom main sanctuary will be on February 7, 2009. This service will be led by Rabbi August and Cindy Paley. Our March service, to be led by Mollie Wine, will also be at Adat Shalom, in Newmark Hall. We encourage you to visit our web site (www.leveisha.org), or our ads in the Jewish Journal, for updates on the locations of future services.

As a result of these changes, we have postponed our fundraiser, which originally was set for March 14, to a day this summer. We will let you know as soon as we have a new date.

We will be forming a new not-for-profit corporation, "Lev Eisha," and Rabbi August will continue as our spiritual leader. She is already in our hearts!

Please join us at our February 7 service. We also have a Breakfast and learning session at 8:30 a.m. Following the service there will be an extended Kiddush, sponsored by Pearl Councelbaum. It is sure to be a wonderful Shabbat.

Warmly,

Olivia Goodkin

Arielle's Bat Mitzvah

Arielle Singer (our youngest member) and her family would like to invite all of us at Lev Eisha to join them for Arielle's Bat Mitzvah! Arielle's Bat Mitzvah, is on Saturday March 14th at Adat Shalom at 9:15 a.m. It will be in the spirit of Lev Eisha, filled with music and joy. Please plan to attend this simcha and join Arielle for lunch in the Social Hall after the service.

From Oy! to Joy- 8:30 Breakfast & Beracha

February is the month after...

  • A new president assumes office
  • The Gaza war
  • Getting used to the new financial reality
  • New Year's 2009--a year that brings changes for us all
I will have been attending a rabbis' spirituality conference during the last week of January, and I am so excited to bring my new learning and ideas to Lev Eisha.

Our 8:30 breakfast study session will be called From Oy! To Joy: using our spiritual tools to heal. I will share and teach the prayers, chants, and meditations that I use when I need to find strength and courage to face challenging times.

Please join us for breakfast and bring your favorite songs, poems, readings and other spiritual tools that you use to find hope and joy.

Let us use all available wisdom to make our lives rich with meaning, forgiveness, openness and love. Chazak, Chazak V'Nitchazak: Let us be strong and strengthen one another.

L'Shalom, Rabbi August
